Feedback Tool
Feedback is a powerful tool that can be used to motivate and improve organizations, groups and individuals. Although feedback can facilitate learning and promote effective performance, there are cultural barriers within healthcare can prevent or inhibit this type of behaviour. The goal of the Feedback Tool is to explore how feedback can be used to drive quality and process improvement in the healthcare environment.
Phase 1: Team Feedback Tool
The first phase of the Tool examined how feedback can be used to improve interprofessional health team processes and ultimately patient care. The vehicle for the Team Feedback tool was a web-based application called Rypple which allowed team members to provide anonymous, rapid-fire feedback on team processes and performance. The tool's process enabled follow-up face-to-face team discussions and encouraged teams to create actionable solutions for incremental changes to enhance team health and performance. The Team Feedback Tool was implemented and piloted in General Internal Medicine at the University Health Network's Toronto General Hospital from early May 2009 to July 2009.
The Team Feedback Tool was presented at the 2010 and 2011 Interprofessional Health Collaborative.

Phase 2: Feedback Kiosk (Current Phase)
With the second phase of the Tool, we are examining how feedback can be used for organizational, group and individual development. Together with the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation, our goal is to create a tool that will allow both patients, friends/family of patients and care providers to provide real-time feedback and messages of recognition. We hope to engage the hospital community by creating an interface that would allow these messages to be captured and displayed. This new tool aims to enhance hospital processes and the experiences of patients and healthcare professionals by providing a platform that facilitates the sharing of positive messages and identiļ¬es opportunities for improvement.
